About Morocco

Red-baked mud Kasbahs from times gone by… sunny beaches... snake charmers... labyrinths of winding alleys and passageways... Vibrant bustling souks... breathtaking scenery. It has to be said that Morocco is one of the most charming and fascinating countries to visit.

Everywhere you go you can enjoy many different exotic sounds and smells and marvel at how modern life blends in so well alongside the traditional. The Moroccan people are very friendly and hospitable and will often invite strangers into their homes or shops for a cup of ‘Berber whiskey’…otherwise known as mint tea.

Morocco benefits from over 300 days of sunshine per year – the country has a climate comparable to the Mediterranean climate. The summers are hot and the winters are mild making Morocco an all year round destination.

The tourism industry in Morocco is undergoing a huge unprecedented change. This has been brought about by the government's Vision 2010 strategy which is aimed at turning Morocco into one of the world's premier tourist destinations by the year 2010.

A visit to Morocco is undoubtedly an exceptional experience and one not to be missed. With its enchanting nature, you will want to go back again and again.

Getting there

Morocco MapMorocco can be accessed relatively easily and at reasonable prices, with a flying time of less than three hours from London. Access into and around the country of Morocco has been getting easier and easier in recent years and this is set to improve even further in order to successfully achieve the goals of the government’s Vision 2010 plan of increasing the number of tourists to Morocco to 10 million by 2010.

In order to facilitate this increase in tourism an EU Open Skies Agreement was signed in Marrakech on 14th December 2005 which lifts all limitations for airlines both in the EU and Morocco.

Easyjet was the first airline to fly to Morocco under this new agreement – flights began in July 2006 from London Gatwick to Marrakech. The Moroccan government signed a five year agreement with Ryanair to increase the number of routes into Morocco fro Europe to twenty, thereby delivering almost 1 million passengers per year. Ryanair currently (May 2007) fly from London to Marrakech and Fez.

In order to provide a suitable road infrastructure to cope with the Vision 2010 strategy of increasing tourism to 10 million, Morocco plans to have constructed a total of 1,450km of new roads by the year 2010. The project to build 100km of road per year for the four years running up to 2004 was achieved with success and the new motorways have been planned in accordance to the increased number of tourists new flights will bring in the near future.

Cost of living

According to Finfacts (2006), Casablanca ranked 88th place in the world rankings of the cost of living. This compares to London - 5th most expensive; Paris 15th and Dublin 18th. Taking into consideration that Morocco is not as expensive as many European holiday destinations, tourists can therefore enjoy a luxury holiday for a small proportion of the price they would pay elsewhere.
